Good thinking #MuseumInstaSwap
I’ve been following Russell Dornan, Web Editor at Wellcome Collection, on Twitter for a little while. Sometimes we share tweets about cats. I noticed he recently wrote a post on Wellcome Collection's blog about his idea for #MuseumInstaSwap. I spotted this on Instagram at the time, and instantly wished that we’d been involved at the British Library. Next time!
So what happened? Ten of London’s museums dived into each others' collections for the first ever museum Instagram swap. Russell came up with the idea after Londonist listed their ten best London museums on Instagram.
Russell describes the project on Wellcome Collection's blog as a ‘cultural exchange’ and ‘an exciting way to collaborate and share our content in a new way’. It also sounded like a rare treat to be nosy and explore other organisation’s collections for a week.
I love the example Russell gives on the blog of how when they looked at transport maps from the Wellcome’s perspective, it reminded them of a brain, in terms of the aesthetic and the network of channels that allow a brain to function.
10 London museums have paired up on @instagram this week to connect over stories and themes. Our partner is the dynamic @ltmuseum. Maps of London in the @ltmuseum like this one remind us of a brain, both in terms of the aesthetic and the network of channels that allows the city/brain to function. Cities and brains are organised in similar ways: in the same way evolution has shaped the brain, we have shaped our cities, increasing organisation and efficiency. As they grow larger, both cities and brains become more densely interconnected in order to function. Follow #MuseumInstaSwap to discover some uncanny links between collections across the city. Another favourite of mine was the Design Museum's beautiful shot of the Science Museum's telephones, showing the clear cross-over between the two institution's collections.
#MuseumInstaSwap Ring ring, it’s telephone Tuesday. How many of these phones from the @sciencemuseum Information Age gallery do you think are also in the Design Museum collection? #DesignMuseum #design #ScienceMuseum #science #telephone - 10 London museums have paired up on @instagram this week to connect over stories and themes. I also liked the aesthetic of this post by the Science Museum from the Design Museum. Who knew that the Science Museum has a great collection of dyes? Something for #AskaCurator day (more on that soon).
With a huge number of #dyes in our collection, we couldn't resist the wonderful colours of this dyed wood in the #DesignsOfTheYear exhibition. To fix the colour permanetly to the wood, the pieces are submerged in boiling dye for a couple of days. Together with nine other #museums in #London, we’re celebrating each other's collections on @Instagram all this week. Follow #MuseumInstaSwap this week to see more stories and connections as we show you the @designmuseum through our eyes.
Hopefully this will be something that happens again and I'd love for us to be more involved at the Library (hint, hint). I've recently been helping look after the Library's Instagram account and I think it's the perfect platform for the cultural sector.
